Comparison
Supabase vs Firebase
Both are common backends under a generated frontend. Both give the client a public config and expect rules to protect data. The difference is the data model and which dashboard you will be reading at 11pm.

| Question | Supabase | Firebase |
|---|---|---|
| Data model | Postgres. SQL, joins, and a schema you can read. | Firestore documents or Realtime Database. Flexible records, fewer joins. |
| Who may read a row | Row Level Security policies in Postgres. | Security rules on Firestore or Storage. |
| Client key | Anon key is public. Service role key is secret. | Client config is public. Admin SDK credentials are secret. |
| Auth | Built-in auth, or you can put Clerk or another provider in front. | Firebase Authentication, widely documented for web and mobile. |
| Where it shows up | Very common in Lovable and Bolt projects. | Common when the builder or template started from Google's samples. |
| Pricing shape | Free tier, then Pro from $25/month plus compute, as checked 16 Oct 2026. | Usage-based. See the Firebase and Google Cloud pricing pages. |
| Lock-in feeling | Postgres you can dump and move, plus Supabase-specific APIs if you used them. | Firestore queries and rules do not move to SQL unchanged. |
Lean toward Supabase when
You want SQL, you are already on Supabase because the builder put you there, or you want branching and backups that look like a database you know.
Lean toward Firebase when
You want a document model, you are already inside Google Cloud, or your client is mobile and the Firebase SDK is the path the template used.
Neither is safer by brand. The unsafe version of both is a client that can read every record because a rule was never written. If you are choosing fresh for a web app and you can read SQL, Supabase is the more common landing spot in this directory's audience. If the app is already on Firebase, fix the rules before you migrate.
