Supported builders

CursorClaude CodeWindsurfv0ReplitLovableBolt

Best when an agent can run the CLI or MCP and open a branch, which fits Cursor, Claude Code, Windsurf, v0, and Replit. Lovable and Bolt can use the connection string if you paste it into server-side env, not into the client.

What it is

Neon's homepage describes a backend on Lakebase Postgres: a serverless database that branches, authentication in every database, object storage, functions, and an AI gateway. Branching is the feature people use to give an agent a database copy per pull request.

It has been part of Databricks since May 2025. Auth on Neon is described as built on Better Auth. You still design tables and access yourself. This is not a visual policy builder in the Supabase style.

Best for: A code-first app whose database should branch like a git branch, especially when agents open pull requests.

Watch-outs

  • The product has widened beyond “just Postgres.” Confirm which extras you turned on before you describe the architecture.

Our take

Opinion from ShipSafeStack. Not a score, not a certification, and not a sponsorship.

Pick Neon when you want Postgres branches for each agent task and you are comfortable with SQL. Do not assume the bundled auth removes the need to check who can read a row. Connection strings are secrets. They do not belong in the frontend.
